EMC Brings Icarus to Birthday Bash

Champlain College’s Emergent Media Center joined Burlington Generator on March 28 for its one-year Birthday Bash.

The bash was a celebration of what Generator has accomplished in the last year and featured different projects and tables for attendees to enjoy. The EMC brought along Icarus, a project being developed by the Sandbox Team.

Icarus combines the Oculus Rift with physical hardware to “create an immersive flying experience.” The Oculus displays an aerial environment that allows the user to navigate it using a pair of wings. Game Programming senior Alex Beauchesne said that like most of the sandbox projects, Icarus is “an experiment to see what is possible by combining old and new technology.”

The EMC’s MakerLab has a partnership with Generator that allows its members and Champlain students to share the two spaces. Since partnering with the EMC, Generator has grown “into a dedicated makerspace with a community of over 130 makers.”
