The Division of Communication and Creative Media is co-sponsoring two events featuring The YES MEN “culture jamming activist duo,” Andy Bichlbaum and Mike Bonanno.
Wednesday, March 4: The duo’s first film, The YES MEN, will be screened at 7:00 p.m. in the Alumni Auditorium. The YES MEN is about two anti-corporate activists who travel from conference to conference impersonating members of the World Trade Organization.
Tuesday, March 17: YES MAN Mike Bonanno will be on campus for two events:
- 3:00 – 5:00 pm, Alumni Auditorium: Bonanno will host an afternoon workshop on how to start a YES LAB, an open network of supporters and collaborators that stage critical media actions around social and environmental issues. The workshop will be from .
- 7:00 pm, Alumni Auditorium: Bonanno will give a public presentation. Using tactical media, The YES MEN aim to raise awareness about what they consider problematic social and environmental issues. While impersonating entities they find problematic, a practice they call “identity correction,” The YES MEN operate under the idea that lies can expose truth.
Through their YES LAB, Mike and Andy have famously produced and distributed a fake Special Edition Issue of the New York Times and launched the spoof ‘Coal Cares’ campaign (as well as the ‘Safe to Drink’ project). The duo has produced two films, The YES MEN (2003) and The YES MEN Fix the World (2009), and are the subject of a third film being released called The YES MEN Are Revolting.
Both events are free and open to the public.
