AUT Students Design Billboards to Thank Essential Workers

Lyn Smith, a Junior Visual Communications major, is studying abroad at Auckland University of Technology this semester. Smith and nine other students from her class designed billboards in collaboration with LUMO, a New Zealand digital billboard company.

The 21 billboards are now displayed throughout Aoeteroa (The Māori name for New Zealand) as “thank you’s” to essential workers who are required to be out on the roads. The project is called “Aotearoa gratitude.”

Each student created their own design, which features a positive message handwritten by another team member.

According to Smith, they had only three days to complete the project. “This was a super quick project with a super important message and I am so happy to have been involved in it!”

The billboard features Smith’s illustration and signature, paired with a classmate’s message.
